Technological advances mean highly-detailed information about player performance can now be gathered, collated and analysed quicker than ever before. PAT includes any equipment that has the potential to record, store, transmit, analyse or communicate player performance in real time during a match, and includes items such as heart-rate monitors, rackets and player tracking systems.

Ever since 1980 and the introduction of Cyclops at the Wimbledon Championships, electronic aids have been a feature of decision-making by officials in tennis. The growth of the sport and improvements within computer processing power have led to the development of systems to track and detect balls, all of which has contributed to the potential to automate line calling.
