Akugue secures first title since debut pro triumph in 2022

26 Aug 2024

Noma Noha Akugue captured her biggest title yet – and first since her debut professional triumph over two years ago – on the ITF World Tennis Tour at W75 Prerov.

The German defeated fellow 20-year-old Kristina Dmitruk 6-2 3-6 6-1 in the final of the Czech clay court event for a triumph could well catapult her on to bigger and better things.

Akugue, who possesses a fierce forehand and a seemingly nerveless on court demeanour, had been gathering momentum as an emerging star in the professional game after a breakthrough run to the final at the WTA event in Hamburg in 2023.

But despite climbing to a career-high ranking of No. 142 in July 2023, her upward trajectory has faltered since.

She is on the cusp of a return to the top 200 though after a fine run of form in August which has taken in semi-final runs at ITF W75 events in Hechingen and Amstetten, as well as the biggest title of her career this weekend.
