Alcaraz and Badosa among first players confirmed for 2023 Hopman Cup
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and event partner Tennium have announced the first three teams that will compete in the 2023 Hopman Cup, the ITF’s official mixed team competition, at Nice Lawn Tennis Club on 19-23 July.
Addressing an official tournament press conference in Nice on Tuesday 28 February, Tournament Director Iva Majoli and Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi revealed the following teams would take part in the first edition of the historic event since 2019:
France – Richard Gasquet and Alizé Cornet
Spain – Carlos Alcaraz and Paula Badosa
Switzerland – Leandro Riedi and Belinda Bencic
A total of six teams will compete in the 2023 and 2024 editions, expanding to eight from 2025 onwards. As hosts, France will field a team each year. The remaining three teams for the 2023 edition will be announced in due course. The event will be played on clay.
As in previous editions of the competition, each team will consist of one male and one female player with ties between nations featuring one men’s singles match, one women’s singles match and a mixed doubles match.
Named after renowned Australian Davis Cup captain Harry Hopman, the Hopman Cup was founded in 1989 and was previously played in Perth, Australia. This year’s players will be joining an illustrious list of previous competitors including Roger Federer, Steffi Graf, Andy Murray, Li Na, John McEnroe and Serena Williams.
Speaking at the official press conference, David Haggerty, ITF President, said: “I would like to extend my thanks to the Nice Lawn Tennis Club for hosting, the Mayor of Nice for your support and our event partners Tennium, with whom we look forward to staging this prestigious event for the next five years. Alongside the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup, the Hopman Cup is another ITF event that gives players the opportunity to represent their countries, and compete for something bigger than themselves. It is a truly unique fixture on the tennis calendar and holds a special place in the heart of players and supporters. After a brief hiatus since 2019, we are delighted to return this event to the tennis calendar.”
Kristoff Peulinckx, Tennium CEO, said: "We want to thank the ITF for entrusting Tennium with the organisation of this historic event. We believe Nice is going to be the perfect stage for this new edition of the Hopman Cup, and we couldn't be happier to organise it with the help of the city and the Nice Lawn Tennis Club."
Iva Majoli, Tournament Director, said: “The Hopman Cup is an incredible competition. A unique competition because you play for your country, you play as a team and you play as a mixed team. This is quite rare on the circuit. I have great memories of playing the event in 1996 with my friend Goran Ivanišević.”
Tickets will go on sale in March and further information will be released in due course.
