Algeria, Mauritius star at second edition of African Beach Games
Mauritius won a milestone maiden gold medal at the African Beach Games in Hammamet, Tunisia last weekend.
Sophie Catherine Alleaune and Francoise Bancilhon came out on top in the women’s doubles at the second edition of the event, bettering the silver medal Mauritus won in the men’s event in the inaugural edition in Cape Verde in 2019.
The Mauritians won all four of their matches against Algeria, Tunisia, Kenya and Morocco, though it wasn’t an easy ride, having to come from a set down and win through in a match tie-break against both Kenya and Algeria.
Meanwhile in the men’s, Algeria triumph ensured they topped the medals table at the conclusion of the Games with 15 golds and a total of 34 medals overall, improving on their second-place finish in 2019.
The win by Said Sahtali and Hichem Yasri was the final medal won by Algeria, capping a historic week for the nation.
“The Beach Tennis competition of the second African Beach Games took place in a very friendly atmosphere; the level of all participating teams was very close,” said Hichem Riani, CAT General Manager. “Congratulations to all laureates.”
All nations involved were recipients of SANDEVER Superkits, each of which comprises of one court, four paddles and six stage 2 balls, with all the necessary equipment to allow nations to develop the sport.
