Avanesyan wins big and claims career-best title at Versmold
Russia's Elina Avanesyan secured the biggest title of her career after topping the podium at W60 Versmold.
Silverware has been forthcoming for Avanesyan this season, with this her third success following two wins at W15 Cairo earlier in the campaign, although Versmold was her first victory at a W60 event.
The 18-year-old was forced to do it the hard way, however, and required a match tiebreak to negotiate both of her qualifying matches before seeing three of her five main draw encounters go to a third set.
Inevitably, the final was no walk in the park either and Avanesyan needed to find her poise after losing the opening set. She duly did and eventually dispatched Italy’s Federica di Sarra 6-7(4) 6-2 6-2.
Ekaterine Gorgodze of Georgia also triumphed at a W60 event, with the 29-year-old topping the podium at Grodzisk Mazowiecki. It was a maiden triumph of the season for the left-hander and the first time she had lifted silverware on the ITF World Tennis Tour since her victory at W25 Frydek Mistek in September 2019.
Gorgodze, who successfully navigated qualifying at Roland Garros in June only to fall in the first round, held her nerve in the decisive third set to overcome France’s Chloe Paquet 7-6(7) 0-6 6-4. She has risen to No. 164 in the world rankings.
Elsewhere, there was a Japanese influence in the winners’ enclosure at W15 events as Ayumi Koshiishi and Mana Kawamura both claimed their first professional titles at W15 Monastir and W15 Cordenons respectively.
There was a professional debut to remember for Denmark’s Johanne Christine Svendsen as she marked her ITF World Tennis Tour bow with a stunning victory at W15 Vejle. The 17-year-old defeated Sohyun Park of Korea, Republic in the final
France’s Selena Janicijevic was another first-time winner, although her experience at professional level is greater than that of Svedsen, with the teenager overcoming compatriot Lucie Nguyen Tan in the final.
Elena Malygina of Estonia, meanwhile, topped the podium at W15 Savitaipale to post her first ITF World Tennis Tour title since 2019, while Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz made it back-to-back victories at W15 Cairo.
Having conquered all before her in the Egyptian capital last week, Romero Gormaz returned and duly dispatched Germany’s Luisa Meyer auf der Heide 6-2 6-3 in the final.
