Beckley ends four-year wait for a South African ITF men's champion
Alec Beckley became the first man from South Africa to lift a title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in over four years after winning at M15 Sharm El Sheikh on Sunday.
The 21-year-old from Johannesburg overcame top-seeded Italian Simone Roncalli 6-4 6-4 to win his maiden professional singles title.
It was the first triumph for his nation in ITF men’s tour competition since Lloyd Harris won the last of his 13 ITF singles titles before graduating to the ATP Challenger Tour.
Beckley, who trains at Johannesburg’s Rata Tennis Academy, is used to playing at 1800 metres above sea level, making his seamless switch to sea-level in Egypt all the more impressive.
Elsewhere, former junior world No. 27 Lukas Neumayer won his third title of the year - and first above M15 level - at M25 Madrid.
The 20-year-old Austrian bounced back from a four-match losing streak at ATP Challenger level to secure his first hard court title with a 6-4 6-1 victory over American Nicolas Moreno de Alboran.
