BNP Paribas World Team Cup dates and venues for 2023
The ITF has confirmed the dates and venues for the BNP Paribas World Team Cup Qualification and World Group events for 2023.
The ITF’s flagship wheelchair tennis team event is set to feature regional qualifications at four different venues for the first time since 2019 with the BNP Paribas World Team Cup World Group returning to Vilamoura, Portugal for the second year in a row.
The dates and venues for 2023 are:
8-11 February: BNP Paribas World Team Cup African Qualification, Abuja, Nigeria
13-16 February: BNP Paribas World Team Cup Americas Qualification, Puebla, Mexico
28 Feb - 3 March: BNP Paribas World Team Cup Asian Qualification, Pattaya, Thailand
21-26 March: BNP Paribas World Team Cup European Qualification, Antalya, Turkey
1-7 May: BNP Paribas World Team Cup World Group, Vilamoura, Portugal
Nigeria and Thailand will host the African Qualification and Asian Qualification, respectively, for the first time since regional qualification events were introduced in 2012.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BNP World Team Cup was not held in 2020, while in 2021 and 2022 the regional qualifications were all combined across one week at the same venue, in Vilamoura, Portugal and Antalya, Turkey, respectively.
Twenty-eight teams have earned direct entry for the 2023 BNP World Team Cup following their results at the 2022 World Team Cup in Vilamoura. Nations that finished in positions 1-10 in the men’s event, positions 1-8 in the women’s event, positions 1-6 in the quad event and positions 1-4 in the junior event will return to Vilamoura next May.
The BNP Paribas World Team Cup is often referred to as the Davis and Billie Jean King Cups of wheelchair tennis. The initial event took place in California in 1985 involving six men’s teams. The women’s competition began the following year, with quad and junior events introduced in 1998 and 2000 respectively.
Over 100 teams from around 50 countries take part in the competition each year, with regional qualifying held for the men’s, women’s and quad events.
BNP Paribas has been the event’s title sponsor since 2012, while UNIQLO, title sponsor of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, is an official partner of the BNP Paribas World Team Cup.
