Borg and Szabanin seal Porto Alegre joy as focus moves to Banana Bowl
Sweden’s Leo Borg scooped the biggest title of his fledgling career as Natalia Szabanin of Hungary claimed her second piece of silverware on the calendar’s South American swing at J1 Porto Alegre.
Qualifier Borg, son of the legendary Bjorn Borg, triumphed on the Brazilian clay after recovering from a set down in the boys’ final to overpower third seed Bruno Kuzuhara of the United States 3-6 6-4 6-2.
"I can't describe the feeling," said Borg. "This is my first title at a Grade 1 tournament and I am really happy about it. I played well throughout the week and it gives me even more confidence to perform at Grade A level. I want to thank everyone, they were so kind to me since the minute I got here."
Top seed Szabanin, meanwhile, navigated the tournament without dropping a set and sealed the fifth title of her junior career by dispatching Russia’s Diana Shnaider 6-4 6-4 in the girls’ final.
"It is awesome," said Szabanin. "I am so happy to win, especially because it has been such a tough week. From the three tournaments I played in South America, I won two, so I am happy and confident. Playing here is definitely special to me."
Victory for the 17-year-old acts as the perfect prelude to the maiden Grade A of the season and the prestigious Banana Bowl at JA Criciuma, which begins today.
Szabanin has now suffered just one defeat in her last 13 matches, which came in the quarter-finals at J1 Lambare, having kickstarted her South American odyssey with victory at J1 Salinas in Ecuador last month.
The venue for Grade A competition has switched in recent years from Porto Alegre to Criciuma, but the former has a rich heritage and an impressive array of headline acts on the list of past tournament winners.
Borg and Szabanin follow in the footsteps of three-time Roland Garros winner Gustavo Kuerten, Thomas Muster, another victor in Paris, US Open conqueror Andy Roddick and reigning Olympic champion Monica Puig in topping the tournament’s podium.
