Peru’s Ignacio Buse has been cooking up a storm in recent weeks.

Not in the kitchen (which is rather more the domain of his uncle, world-renowned chef Gaston Acurio), but on the clay tennis courts of the Americas, which have seen him claim his first two professional singles titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour over the past fortnight.

Buse, a former junior world No. 9, is tipped alongside fellow 19-year-old Gonzalo Bueno as the future of men’s tennis in Peru and he has made his first strides in that direction over the past month.

Buse won his first ITF singles crown on Argentine clay at M25 Mendoza without dropping a set in the first week of October, defeating local hope Luciano Emanuel Ambrogi 7-6(4) 6-3 in the final.

He then followed up this weekend with a repeat triumph, again defeating three local players en route to the title at M25 Zapopan in Mexico, polishing off victory with a 6-3 7-6(1) win over USA’s Victor Lilov.

It comes weeks after he made a triumphant Davis Cup singles debut for Peru during their 4-1 triumph over Norway in their World Group I tie in Lima.

His ITF title-winning exploits saw him rocket 146 spots in the ATP rankings on Monday to a career-high No. 539, becoming the Peruvian No. 3 behind world No. 69 Juan Pablo Varillas and his good friend Bueno, the world No. 390.

Buse is very much treading the ITF Pathway in his pursuit of becoming a successful professional player. As well as reaching the junior top 10, he competed at all four junior Grand Slams, won two ITF junior singles and three junior doubles titles, and was selected to participate in the Grand Slam Player Development Programme/ITF Touring Team to Australia in January 2022.

Elsewhere this weekend, there was also a milestone triumph on the ITF World Tennis Tour for former junior world No. 35 Philip Henning, who won his first professional singles title at M15 Sharm El Sheikh.

Henning, who has played college tennis in Georgia (alongside studying Computer Science) since 2018, won eight matches on the bounce in Egypt after coming through qualifying to defeat Vadym Ursu 6-3 6-3 in the title match.

It was just his second professional appearance of the season – on top of representing his native South Africa in Davis Cup in August.
