Djokovic one of five players set for fifth Olympic appearance in Paris

History will be on the line for Novak Djokovic later this month when he begins his latest pursuit of an elusive gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Tennis Event.

But while the super Serb ponders how to stifle the surge of supremely talented Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at the upcoming Games, Djokovic can be safe in the knowledge that he’ll scribble his name into the history books simply by turning up in Paris.

Djokovic, along with Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, Sara Errani and Elena Vesnina, are set to compete in their fifth Olympic Tennis Event at Paris 2024.

Just eight other tennis players have taken part in five or more Games in Olympic history.

Leander Paes, who competed in seven straight Games between Barcelona 1992 and Rio 2016 is the outright leader for most appearances at the Olympics, closely followed by Daniel Nestor, who played in six successive events from Atlanta 1996 to Rio 2016.

Three other men (Mahesh Bhupathi, Mark Knowles and Max Mirnyi) and three women (Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Sam Stosur and Venus Williams) have taken part in as many as five Games.

Djokovic and Nishikori are set to play solely in the singles event in Paris, while Murray is currently scheduled to compete in both singles and doubles alongside Dan Evans, with Errani and Vesnina just featuring in doubles, alongside Jasmine Paolini and Ekaterina Alexandrova, respectively.

Errani is the only one of the five not to have won a medal in her four previous appearances at the Games.

Murray, of course, famously won back-to-back singles golds at London 2012 and Rio 2016, Djokovic and Nishikori are both former bronze medallists, the Serb taking bronze at Beijing 2008 and the Japanese securing third place at Rio 2016.

Vesnina, meanwhile, won women's doubles gold alongside Ekaterina Makarova at Rio 2016.
