Fantastic five: GB's storming weekend on the ITF World Tennis Tour

24 Mar 2025

Great Britain enjoyed an unprecedented weekend of success in men’s competition on the ITF World Tennis Tour – with five players securing ITF hard court titles.

Harry Wendelken, Ryan Peniston, Oliver Crawford, Johannus Monday and Jay Clarke all collected ITF silverware – the first time a nation has crowned five champions over the same weekend since men’s entry level professional tennis was relaunched under the ITF World Tennis Tour banner in 2019.

The previous most titlists by any one nation over a tournament weekend was four – with Italy crowning four champions over a weekend last September, and France producing four winners on three separate occasions – twice in April 2019 and again in June last year.

Wendelken’s victory at M25 Toulouse-Balma in France was arguably the most significant of the Brit triumphs on Sunday. The 23-year-old former junior world No. 34 came through qualifying to beat six Frenchmen on their own patch for his first title pro title since September 2023 - his third ITF singles title overall.

Peniston also claimed his first ITF singles title of the season, beating Chris Rodesch 3-6 6-1 6-3 in the final at M25 Loule in Portugal.

Crawford scooped his third win of the year with a 7-6(5) 1-6 6-2 triumph over Yan Bai at M25 Shenzhen, while Monday and Clarke secured their second titles of 2025 with wins over Alex Rybakov at M25 Bakersfield (USA), and Alexandr Binda at M15 Ahmedabad, respectively.

Elsewhere this weekend, former Australian Open semi-finalist Hyeon Chung continued his resurgence on the ITF World Tennis Tour by claiming his second title of the season at M15 Nishi-Tokyo in Japan.

Chung, once regarded as one of the rising stars of men’s professional tennis before persistent back injuries derailed his career, is rediscovering that winning feeling in ITF competition this year after years of toil with injuries, rehab and attempted comebacks.

As well as winning in Japan this weekend without dropping a set, he also reached the final at M25 Luan the previous week – and won at M25 Bali in January for his first piece of silverware since he claimed the Chengdu Challenger title in 2019.
