Ferrero enjoying life as coach of rising star Alcaraz
Spain is not short of talented tennis players and now the next generation are able to call on their very own superstar coaches.
Sixteen-year-old Carlos Alcaraz started working with former world No. 1 and Roland Garros champion Juan Carlos Ferrero in September 2018. Since then he has seen his ranking rise from No. 119 to a career-high of No. 25.
“He has a very good level,” explained Ferrero, who got the call to start working with Alcaraz because of a mutual contact. “I know he’s 16 years old and he’s very far away still from professional but it was a good opportunity for me to reset a little as a coach after the experience that I had with [Alexander] Zverev.
"It’s a completely different work that I’m doing with Carlos because I have to stay the whole day with him, educate and tell him everything that he needs to improve but he’s a good guy and I’m happy.”
Ferrero, who runs an academy back in Spain, is enjoying life on the Juniors circuit and feels he has a lot to give back to the game.
He added: “I have a lot of junior players in my academy. I have the experience to be with them. I just landed in the junior world but I’m seeing a very good level. A lot of things that Carlos has to improve are different in the world of a junior and the world of a professional.”
It’s no coincidence that since Alcaraz has started working with Ferrero that his game has moved up a gear. The Spaniard finished runner-up in his first tournament under Ferrero’s tutelage at the Grade 2 event Sanxenxo, before reaching the semi-finals of JA Porto Alegre and then claiming his first Grade 1 title at Villena in Spain.
He’s through to the quarter-finals on the grass of Roehampton and will look to make an impression at Junior Wimbledon next week.
