From creche to quarters: Leach follows his mum's Wimbledon footstep

For those unaware, Jagger Leach is the son of former world No. 1 and Olympic gold medallist Lindsay Davenport and is currently following in his mother’s footsteps by starring on the grass courts of Wimbledon.

Leach defeated Switzerland qualifier Flynn Thomas, who has been receiving admiring glances this week, 6-3 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of a Junior Grand Slam for the first time. He will now play France’s Theo Papamalamis for a place in the last four of the Junior Championships.

Davenport famously conquered all before her in the Wimbledon's women's draw in 1999 but Jagger, who was born eight years after his mother’s SW19 triumph, is now making moves within his own tennis career.

While Davenport is fondly remembered for her stunning triumph here 25 years ago, it is not something that Leach has discussed with her at length prior to his own Wimbledon debut.

“I have spoken to her a little about it but I feel like I know a different version of my mum,” Leach told itftennis.com. “She is just 'mum' to me. She never has any pictures of herself playing or any trophies around the house.

“It wasn’t until I started playing myself that I realised and grasped what she had done in her career. Then I would ask, ‘did you win that title?’ and she would be embarrassed about it. I would be like, ‘wow’.

“It is honestly just like having a regular mum. I don’t think about having a famous mum and she doesn’t talk about her career unless I ask. I have spoken to some other people who are the sons of great champions like Cruz Hewitt [the son of Lleyton] and Nicholas Godsick [the son of Mary Joe Fernandez].

“I feel there are a few of us in the same boat who are playing and doing well. I maybe get asked about it but that’s it. I am just a tennis player trying to do my best.”

He may not be overly familiar with Davenport’s Wimbledon triumph, but he has been to SW19 on many occasions while his mum was working as a coach and commentator and playing within the legends competition.

While Davenport was busy, Leach spent time within the Wimbledon creche which he revisited this week and met the staff who looked after him more than a decade ago.

“When my mum was here – working, coaching or playing in the legends event – I would spend a lot of time in the creche,” said junior world No. 25 Leach. “I visited the ladies there a few days ago and they couldn’t believe how much I have grown.

“I haven’t been here for a while, since before Covid. I guess it will really come full circle when I am here playing the pros.”

Talking of Lindsay Davenport the coach, Leach concedes that when his mum offers guidance while he is on the practice court, it is very much worth his while listening and resisting the temptation to disregard parental advice.

“My mum really knows what she is talking about when it comes to tennis,” added Leach. “When she gives me advice, I have to try and separate the mother from the tennis legend and coach.

“When we’re on the practice court and she tells me something, irrespective of what I feel, she is right. And she will be so pleased with how I am doing here. We speak a lot – and she is probably trying to call me right now.

“She is back in California currently working for Tennis Channel but shewill be so pleased. It does feel great to be in the quarter-finals. I have been playing well on grass lately and I am happy that it has translated to the match courts here.”
