Fruhvirtova, 14, becomes youngest ITF title winner in over six years
In just her third professional tournament, Brenda Fruhvirtova became the youngest player to win a title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in over six years after triumphing on Argentine soil at W25 Tucuman.
At 14 years, 10 months and four days, the talented Czech defied both her age and her ranking to become the youngest ITF titlist since Claire Liu (then 14 years, nine months and 25 days) won a $10,000 ITF event in Orlando in 2015.
Fruhvirtova (who entered the tournament via a junior exempt place) began the week ranked at No. 1079 and hadn’t surpassed the second round in either of her two previous professional appearances, won five matches in a row – including an impressive three-set semi-final win over former world No. 59 Paula Ormaechea and a 6-3 6-3 triumph over Brazilian world No. 240 Carolina Alves in the title decider.
To add further weight to the occasion, the youngster was presented with her trophy by former world No. 3 and 1990 US Open singles champion Gabriela Sabatini.
Fruhvirtova is one of 21 players in the last quarter of a century to win a professional title while aged just 14 – joining a list of hugely prominent names to have achieved the feat. The likes of Justine Henin, Anna Kournikova, Laura Robson, Dinara Safina and Monica Niculescu all claimed their first pro titles while still only 14.
Fruhvirtova (whose older sister Linda, 16, already has two ITF singles titles to her name) continues to be active on the ITF Junior tour, having won five girls’ singles titles last year and reaching a high of No. 4 in the world. She also helped Czech Republic to glory in ITF international team competition at both under 14 and under 16 level, winning the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in 2019 and the Junior Billie Jean King Cup Finals in 2021.
At the other end of the spectrum, former world No. 46 Tatjana Maria - 20 years Fruhvirtova's senior - also enjoyed a weekend to remember on the ITF World Tennis Tour after claiming her first title in over three and half years.
The 34-year-old German came through qualifying to win W60 Rome, beating American Alycia Parks 6-4 4-6 6-2 in the final for her 16th ITF singles title and first tournament victory since she collected her lone WTA crown at 2018 Mallorca.
