A week after finishing runner-up at the same venue, Joanna Garland went one better as she collected her first professional singles title at W15 Sharm El Sheikh with victory over Katie Boulter.

The 19-year-old from Chinese Taipei defeated Boulter 6-3 3-6 6-3 in the final to secure a milestone maiden tournament win and deny Boulter a sixth ITF singles crown in the Brit’s first tournament appearance since March.

Garland now has a 1-2 record in finals on the ITF World Tennis Tour following runner-up finishes in Ortisei in December 2018 and Sharm El Sheikh in mid-October, when she fell to home favourite Sandra Samir.

A strong junior player, Garland reached a career-high ranking of No. 14 on the junior circuit and collected seven titles, albeit without truly making her mark at the junior Grand Slams.

Garland will look to continue her steady transition to the professional tour at another W15 tournament in Sharm El Sheikh this week, where, incidentally, she has been drawn against Sunday’s final opponent Boulter in the first round.

There was also success for another 19-year-old last week, with German teenager Sina Herrmann collecting her second professional singles title – and first on a hard court – at W15 Monastir.

Herrmann defeated Chile’s Barbara Gatica 6-4 6-4 in the final in Tunisia to make it back-to-back titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour, having won her maiden title as a qualifier at W25 Grado in September.

World No. 124 Oceane Dodin won her second title of the year – and the 12th title of her career - on home soil in France after defeating Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the final at W25 Reims.

The 24-year-old Frenchman emerged triumphant from a strong field that included former top 20 players Kaia Kanepi and Ana Konjuh, who faced off against each other in the first round – with the Croatian earning the bragging rights, before falling to eventual runner-up Samsonova at the semi-final stage.
