Gauff leads procession of American women into round two at Paris 2024

28 Jul 2024

Coco Gauff led a swift march of American women into the second round at the Olympic Tennis Event on Sunday.

The 20-year-old, fresh from flying the flag for USA at Friday’s opening ceremony and partnering Jessica Pegula to a doubles win on the opening day, expended little energy in a 57-minute 6-3 6-0 women’s singles victory over Ajla Tomljanovic.

Gauff’s win followed similarly emphatic triumphs for her compatriots.

Emma Navarro blitzed Austria’s Julia Grabher 6-2 6-0 in 62 minutes, Pegula saw off Swiss Viktorija Golubic 6-3 6-4 in 76 minutes, and Danielle Collins was leading Laura Siegemund 6-3 2-0 when the German retired with a left ankle injury.

Siegemund will have doubles on her mind and is expected to be fit to take to court alongside both Alexander Zverev in the mixed doubles, and Angelique Kerber in the women’s doubles.

Gauff, meanwhile, will play Maria Lourdes Carle, who soundly beat Tatjana Maria 6-0 6-0, in round two, while Pegula faces a stern test against Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Elina Svitolina.

Navarro will tackle Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova and Danielle Collins faces the winner of the clash between Caroline Wozniacki and Mayar Sherif.

The American men were less effective across with board, with only Tommy Paul joining Taylor Fritz in the men's singles second round on Sunday. Christopher Eubanks fell to Benjamin Hassan, who became the first player from Lebanon to win an Olympic singles match after prevailing 6-4 6-2, while Marcus Giron lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1 6-4.
