Guinard secures double triumph on men's tour return
Manuel Guinard made it a week to remember on Austrian soil at M25 Vogau as he marked the return of men’s tennis on the ITF World Tennis Tour by winning both the singles and doubles events.
The 24-year-old Frenchman won five matches in straight sets to secure the singles title – defeating Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov 6-3 6-3 in the final – and partnered German Johannes Haerteis to the doubles crown after a tense 6-4 4-6 11-9 triumph over Dutch pair Gijs Brouwer and Jelle Sels.
As a result, he collected his seventh singles title on the ITF World Tennis Tour and sixth in doubles – coming away with both titles at an ITF tournament for the second time, having also achieved the feat at M15 Cairo last December.
“It was a special week for me,” said Guinard. “I've never won a doubles tournament and a singles tournament in the same week in a 25k, so it's been a very good week.”
The M25 Vogau men’s event, along with W15 Oeiras, was the first tournament to return on the ITF World Tennis Tour following its five-month suspension with a series of protocols in place to mitigate the risk of exposure to, and spread of, Covid-19.
In his victory speech, Guinard was keen to acknowledge the organisers for their efforts in running a successful tournament amidst a challenging backdrop.
“It was a very good atmosphere here,” he said. “It's a difficult time and I know how tough it is to organise a tournament like this [at the moment]. This situation is pretty tough, but it's really good for us to be back on court, so thank you very much to the organisers.”
Former junior world No. 1 Clara Tauson won the equivalent tournament taking place on the women’s tour in W15 Oeiras. Read about the 17-year-old Dane’s triumph here.
