Hurricane Tyra Black clinches first professional title in Antalya
Hurricane Tyra Black enjoyed a memorable end to just her second tournament in seven months, claiming her first professional title on the ITF World Tennis Tour at W15 Antalya.
The 20-year-old American, who has contested just seven tournaments since 2019, defeated Italian Federica Bilardo 2-6 6-4 6-4 in Sunday’s final for a milestone win.
“Very happy to have picked up my first pro singles title,” she posted on Instagram. “It was tough being away from the tennis and competition for the last few months but I’m grateful to be back with a title.
“I’m also extremely thankful for the people who have stuck by my side these last few months.”
Black, a former junior world No. 11 and nine-time singles winner on the junior tour, made her comeback from a lengthy spell away from the court in Turkey in late May, reaching the semi-finals in her first tournament, before following up with a maiden title this week.
She wasn’t the only first time winner on the women’s tour last week, with 23-year-old German Anna Gabric also claiming her first title – at W15 Banja Luka.
Meanwhile, Nuria Parrizas-Diaz continued her fine year on the ITF World Tennis Tour – claiming her fourth title of 2021, and first of the year on a clay court, with victory at W25 Grado. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who has a 29-7 win-loss record this year, now has 21 career singles titles to her name.
Anna Kubareva won back-to-back titles after triumphing at W25 Kazan. The 20-year-old Belarusian’s triumph was her first at W25 level, and her third title of the season to add to her two wins in Monastir.
Maria Lourdes Carle, whose 2021 season had been most notable for her shock win over Elena Rybakina – then ranked 407 spots above her – while on Billie Jean King Cup duty in Cordoba in April, won her first title of the year at W25 Santo Domingo.
The 21-year-old Argentine defeated Switzerland’s Conny Perin for her eighth ITF title – and fourth on a hard court – in the Dominican Republic.
Russian Darya Astakhova, 19, maintained her good record in Greece, winning her fourth ITF title on the clay of Heraklion after overcoming Czech Michaela Bayerlova 6-3 6-2 in the final.
There were also wins for 17-year-old Ukrainian Anastasiya Konstantinovna, who picked up her second ITF title at W15 Shymkent; 19-year-old Japanese player Himeno Sakatsume, who won a fourth career title at W15 Monastir; and 27-year-old Belgian Maryna Zanevska, who won her first title in over two years at W25 Otocec.
