'I didn't know I'd won': Jamrichova books her place in Wimbledon final

It has already been a fabulous year for Renata Jamrichova and the Slovakian sensation is on the cusp of another seismic achievement after reaching the Wimbledon girls’ final.

Left-hander Jamrichova was in no mood for hanging around and sealed her place in the final following a commanding 6-0 6-2 last-four win over Czechia’s Vendula Valdmannova in a tie lasting just 62 minutes.

The 17-year-old was crowned Australian Open girls’ champion in January in a victory which propelled her to the summit of the ITF World Tennis Tour girls’ rankings – a position which she has retained ever since.

Jamrichova has also chalked up two professional title wins on the ITF World Tennis Tour, starred for her nation in Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge and won the girls’ doubles at Roland Garros last month.

By reaching the semi-finals, Jamrichova had equalled her best showing at Wimbledon, although the aim now is to take the final step and draft another chapter in the glorious year that is 2024.

If she does, Jamrichova would become the first Slovakian girl to claim the Wimbledon girls’ title and just the second girl in the last 10 years to win multiple Grand Slam singles titles. The accolades and plaudits continue to flow.

However, you would think that someone who had enjoyed as much success as Jamrichova had this year would realise that she had won and reached the Wimbledon final.

“Did you see match point? I won the match, and I actually did not know it was done,” Jamrichova told itftennis.com.

“I thought it was 5-1 but it was 6-2 already. Then I thought is it 40-15? Did I miss my backhand line? What is happening? But then my coach (Jan Matus) told me, and it was all good.

“It is so nice to be here. This is my last junior tournament, and I am just so happy that I can play the last day here in such a beautiful atmosphere.

“It is my favourite Grand Slam, and it is just so nice to be on court happy with myself and happy with my game. It would be nice to go out with a bang tomorrow, but I just want to leave the court with a big smile on my face.

The result was harsh on Valdmannova, who has conducted herself impressively this week and for the first time in her career went beyond the third round at a Junior Grand Slam.

The 16-year-old, who sits at No. 36 in the ITF World Tennis Tour girls’ rankings, has chalked up some impressive scalps this week, defeating the likes of Tyra Caterina Grant and Jeline Vandromme.

While today did not go her way, in time Valdmannova will no doubt reflect on her Wimbledon experience and consider it a significant step forward in her on-court development.

Meabwhile, standing between Jamrichova and her latest piece of silverware is Australia’s Emerson Jones in what is a repeat of January’s Australian Open girls’ final. On that occasion, Jamrichova came out on top.

“We had an amazing match in Australia so I hope it will be another great one,” said Jamrichova. “She is playing super good on the grass and because she is small the ball is coming onto the racket so well.

“I am excited and a bit relieved that I am in a final. Last year I lost in the semi-finals at Wimby and also the US Open, then I got to the final at the Australian Open and broke the semi-finals – so today was like a little final for me.”
