'Indescribable' feeling as Diaz and Miiller clinch first world title
Venezuela's Patty Diaz and Brazil's Rafaella Miiller clinched a first world title as a pair with a 6-1 6-1 victory over Ariadna Costa Graell and Elena Francesconi in Cesenatico on Sunday.
Despite what looked like a one-sided scoreline on paper, Diaz and Miiller both felt a huge surge of relief after the match.
"I had a lot of emotions this year," Miiller said. "It's the first time that Patty wins this tournament and I’m really happy."
Diaz added: "I’m super happy. I am feeling a lot of emotions. I really wanted this victory. I’m super happy and proud that we managed to control the pressure. Everyone was cheering for us. We had to stay focused and we managed to do that."
The men's final was a very similar storyline to the women's, with players that had finished runners-up in the last two editions ending their World Championship hoodoo.
Mattia Spoto, who had won silver for the past two years, and Nico Gianotti, runner-up in 2022, capped a perfect week in north-eastern Italy with a first world title after defeating Michele Cappelletti and Antomi Ramos 7-5 6-2.
Gianotti said: “It was very difficult to lose the last year and for Matti two years ago so it’s incredible to win finally this title. After losing the final in Gran Canaria, we lost a little bit of confidence, but we were playing incredible all this week – we didn’t lose a set – and we are very, very happy. It’s an incredible feeling.”
