ITF World Tennis Tour Player of the Month: Jana Fett
Jana Fett has been named ITF World Tennis Tour Player of the Month for April after bookending the month with two of the biggest titles of her career.
It had been nine years since Fett last won a professional title above W25 level, but any concerns the best days of the 27-year-old’s career were behind her were swiftly quashed after her brilliant showings at W75 Split and W100 Oeiras.
"I’d like to thank you all for the support this past month," said Fett. "It’s been one of the best months of my career and I’m really happy and proud of how I’ve been playing."
Fett tore through the field on home soil in Split, where she was taken to three sets only by Slovenia’s Veronika Erjavec, who would go on to win the biggest title of her career a week later at W75 Koper.
"It’s been one of the best months of my career and I’m really happy and proud of how I’ve been playing"
She managed to deliver a bagel set in the deciding set of that quarter-final encounter and served up another two in her next two matches – thumping Panna Udvardy 6-1 6-0 before dismantling Ipek Oz in similarly emphatic style in the title match.
"Winning the title in Split was really special," added Fett. "I loved playing at home. Since there’s not that many tournaments there, I’m really glad I managed to get the title in front of my people."
Fett, who ranked as high as No. 97 back in 2017, dipped a toe back in the water at higher level at the WTA event in Stuttgart but returned to the ITF World Tennis Tour after a first-round loss on German clay to Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
She instantly rediscovered that winning feeling at W100 Oeiras, racing through to another final – and securing the biggest title of her career – after dismantling Udvardy again for the loss of just two games.
The victory marked her third career title on clay and ninth singles crown on the ITF World Tennis Tour overall.
"It’s a great ranking and confidence boost for me and I’m really excited and hungry for more"
"Of course winning my biggest title so far in Portugal last week was amazing," she said. "My team and I have been working really hard so I’m really proud I managed to play some great tennis and stay consistent throughout those two weeks [in Spilt and Oeiras]."
Fett climbs to No. 128 in the WTA rankings this week - a welcome reward for her special month.
"It’s a great ranking and confidence boost for me and I’m really excited and hungry for more," Fett added. "It also means a lot being named an ITF World Tennis Tour player of the Month – there are so many great players competing every week so it’s an honour being chosen for this award, thank you."
Fett’s fantastic April:
- Compiled a 10-0 win-loss record on the ITF World Tennis Tour
- Went 20-2 in sets
- Recorded six bagel (6-0) sets
- Jumped back inside the world’s top 150 for the first time since September 2018
- Has now won nine ITF singles titles, including five on hard courts, three on clay and one on carpet
