Jasika puts past behind him as redemption season gathers pace
Omar Jasika continues to go from strength-to-strength in his redemption year on the ITF World Tennis Tour, adding a fifth title to his haul this season with victory at M25 Traralgon.
The 25-year-old Australian defeated compatriot Dayne Kelly 6-0 6-2 to collect the eighth ITF singles crown of his career and second at M25 level.
Jasika, a former junior world No. 6, was one of the brightest young prospects in the game back in 2014, when he became the first player in 28 years to lift both the boys’ singles and doubles titles at the US Open.
Within three years he had climbed as high as No. 239 in the ATP rankings, only for his tennis ambitions to come to a juddering halt in early 2018 when he was handed a two-year suspension after testing positive for cocaine.
Jasika’s return to the Tour was delayed by the covid pandemic (he played just one competitive match in four years between 2018 and 2022), but since returning to the Tour in February, he hasn’t looked back.
Jasika, who described himself as a “better person” as a result of his ban from from the sport, has also won titles at M25 Bendigo, M15 Chiang Rai, plus twin triumphs at M15 Heraklion this year, and his latest triumph at Traralgon leaves the world No. 250 just 11 spots shy of the career-high ranking he managed in 2017.
Elsewhere, fellow Australian Bernard Tomic’s comeback continued to gather pace as he collected his third M15 title of the year on the ITF World Tennis Tour at Santo Domingo – the first time the Australian has won as many as three tournaments in a single season since his first year as a junior in 2006.
There was also a third title of 2022 for rising 17-year-old star Jakub Mensik, of Czech Republic, who won at M15 Sharm El Sheikh, while Tunisian Skander Mansouri and Frenchman Terence Atmane both collected their fourth titles of the year, winning at M25 Monastir and M25 Heraklion, respectively.
