Germany’s Nastasja Mariana Schunk was the headline winner last week on the ITF World Tennis Tour as the teenager sealed the first professional title of her career during a week when silverware was claimed by players at differing ends of the experience scale.

Mainz-born Schunk navigated qualifying before conquering all before her at W25 Bydgoszcz in Poland, defeating Russia’s Darya Astakhova in the final after recovering from a set down. The left-hander eventually defeated Astakhova 4-6 6-2 6-0.

The 17-year-old, who sits at No. 687 in the world rankings, has been a regular on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season, although last month reached the final of the Junior Championships, Wimbledon where she succumbed to Spain’s Ane Mintegi Del Olmo.

If Schunk is just starting to make her mark then two other winners of W25 events this week have been topping podiums for some time, with Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi and Anastasia Grymalska of Italy among the trophies once again.

Kanepi, a six-time Grand Slam quarter-finalist who is ranked No. 81 in the world, was in sparkling form at W25 Parnu – her first outing since succumbing in the first round at the Wimbledon Championships last month.

The 36-year-old, who dispatched Anna Siskova of the Czech Republic in the final, dropped just one set on her way to the title on what was her maiden appearance on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season.

Grymalska has also seen her fair share of silverware over the years, although her victory on home soil at W25 Pescara was her first triumph since winning a $15k event at Cordenons back in 2018.

The 31-year-old negotiated qualifying, including a tense showdown with Slovenia’s Nika Radisic, before weaving her way to the final where she overcame fellow Italian Anna Turati 2-6 7-6(4) 6-3.

Recovering from a one-set deficit proved something of a trend for Grymalska who also trailed in both her quarter-final clash with Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva of Andorra and her semi-final tussle against Colombia’s Emiliana Arango.

Denmark’s Olga Helmi, meanwhile, continued her productive campaign on the ITF World Tennis Tour with the second professional title of her career at W15 Monastir. She also claimed victory on the Tunisian hard courts in May.

Across Africa, there was a maiden professional crown for Australia’s Tina Nadine Smith, who powered to victory at W15 Cairo with victory over Italy’s Diletta Cherubini in the final.

Elsewhere, Czech Republic’s Michaela Bayerlova returned to winning ways with her first title in more than two years as the 22-year-old brushed aside all challengers, including Israel’s Nicole Khirin in the final, at W15 Frederiksberg in Denmark.
