Croatian teenager Mili Poljicak’s last tournament triumph came during a Grand Slam, at the 2022 Junior Wimbledon Championships and, while his follow-up title this week also arrived during a major, it was delivered in rather more modest surrounds.

Granted, M15 Monastir doesn’t quite match the prestige of the Australian Open, but Poljicak’s triumph on the ITF World Tennis Tour on Sunday wasn’t without significance.

The 18-year-old defeated Frenchman Robin Bertrand 6-1 2-6 6-4 in the Tunisian city to claim his first ITF men’s singles title, the latest sign that his transition to the men’s game is gathering pace.

Poljicak, the current world No. 510, made a name for himself last July when he became the first Croatian to win the junior title at Wimbledon. He captured the attention of Novak Djokovic at the All England Club, and ultimately practiced with the Serb ahead of his men’s final triumph over Nick Kyrgios.

Starting the year in fine form, the former junior world No. 2 has an 8-1 win-loss record on the ITF World Tennis Tour so far this season, having also reached a semi-final in Monastir a week earlier.

He’ll no doubt be looking for a quick transition to more regular ATP Challenger events having proved his mettle during a runner-up finish, as a wildcard, at the Zagreb Challenger last May.

Poljicak was one of nine men’s singles winners on the ITF World Tennis Tour this weekend, including three – Daniel Little, Daniel Rincon and Elliot Benchetrit – winners at M25 level.
