Korpatsch wins W60 Montreux at scene of Swiatek's last ITF triumph
Tamara Korpatsch celebrated her most significant title in over three years on the ITF World Tennis Tour on Sunday.
The 27-year-old German saw off American Emma Navarro 6-4 6-1 to take the title on Swiss clay at W60 Montreux – her 11th ITF tournament triumph on clay and her third at W60 level, following victories at W60 Hechnigen in 2017 and W60 Prague in 2019.
Korpatch’s victory follows an indifferent run of form in which she lost seven consecutive matches across the WTA Tour, Wimbledon and ITF World Tennis Tour ahead of a confidence-boosting run to the final round of qualifying at the US Open.
Her triumph saw her climb 23 spots to No. 116 in the WTA rankings on Monday, 12 spots shy of the career-high No. 104 she managed earlier this year.
While Kopatsch was adding the W60 Montreux title to her CV, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek was busy collecting her third Grand Slam title – and first US Open crown – on the biggest stage in tennis over in New York.
It perhaps shows the fine margins in the sport – and the springboard provided by the ITF World Tennis Tour to catapult players on to bigger and better things – that Swiatek lifted the very same ITF title in Montreux exactly four years ago.
Back in 2018, Swiatek defeated Belgian Kimberley Zimmermann in straight sets in what would be her last of seven ITF tournament triumphs before she burst on to the global tennis scene with victory at 2020 Roland Garros.
It's safe to say the Pole has gone from strength to strength ever since.
