Kovinic overcomes formidable Oeiras field for record fifth W100 title
Danka Kovinic returned to form in some style after reigning supreme amongst a formidable field on the ITF World Tennis Tour at W100 Oeiras.
The 28-year-old Montenegrin had won just one match in her last five tournaments prior to arriving on Portuguese soil last week, but bounced back by defeating three top 100 players and a former Grand Slam finalist en route to collecting her first title of the year.
Kovinic overcame world No. 99 Oceane Dodin, former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard, No. 34 Marie Bouzkova, No. 101 Sara Sorribes Tormo and No. 93 Rebeka Masarova (6-2 6-2 in the final) during a hugely impressive week to secure her 14th ITF World Tennis Tour crown.
“I don’t remember winning a tournament and playing such great, high-ranked players - especially for a 100k,” admitted Kovinic, who was one of nine top 100 players on the entry list for the event.
“I think it was very tough for everyone because there were many good players. That’s why maybe also this trophy is a bit special because you know from the first moment, the first round, you have to play your best to beat every opponent.
“There was no space, no gap, to play slower or with some kind of ups and downs or mistakes during the matches.”
Kovinic’s triumph was her fifth at W100 level, which sees her equal the record for the most W100 titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour alongside Tatjana Maria and Zhang Shuai.

This one - as much a piece of art as anything else - will live long in the memory.

“It’s going to be in my new apartment,” revealed Kovinic, who was cheered on by her mother in Oeiras.
“I played my first WTA final in 2015 with my mum on the side of the court. Unfortunately right now I don’t have a coach, but it’s good to have support from your family, from everyone around me who sends positive energy. Always her support is very, very important.”
As a result of her efforts in Oeiras, Kovinic climbs 15 places to No. 57 in the world - just 11 spots shy of the career-high ranking she achieved in February 2016.
Kovinic was joined in the W100 winner’s circle by Emma Navarro, who won the biggest title of her career – and fourth overall – at W100 Charleston.
The 21-year-old American defeated Peyton Stearns 2-6 6-2 7-5 in the final and moved to a career-high No. 101 on Monday as a result.
Mirra Andreeva also continued the supremely impressive start to her professional career, defeating Fiona Ferro 2-6 6-1 6-4 in the final at W60 Bellinzona.
The 15-year-old, who has won four of the last seven professional tournaments she has entered, has now won 13-successive matches after back-to-back triumphs in Switzerland.
The teenager became the first player in ITF World Tennis Tour history to win multiple titles at W60 level the previous week at W60 Chiasso.
