Kraus kicks off clay season in style with W75 triumph in Hungary

17 Mar 2025

Sinja Kraus began the clay season in style after winning the biggest title of her career on the ITF World Tennis Tour at W75 Szekesfehervar.

The 22-year-old Austrian recovered from a slow start to defeat local favourite Amarissa Toth 2-6 7-5 6-3 in the title match.

Kraus, who won her first hard court title since 2018 at the turn of the month at W50+H Macon, has enjoyed plenty of success on the dirt in recent years.

Her title this week was the ninth of her career on clay – and her 11th ITF singles triumph overall.

She leapt 28 spots to No. 163 in the WTA rankings this week – just 12 spots shy of the career-high she achieved in May 2023.

Kraus has yet to feature in the main draw at a Grand Slam and has never before been beyond the second round of qualifying at the marquee tournament of the clay court season, Roland Garros, will have high hopes of building on her form ahead of the second major of the year in two months’ time.

Toth, meanwhile, leapt 95 spots in the WTA rankings following her run to the title match, climbing to a career-high No. 301.

It follows a strong run for the 22-year-old this year that has seen her claim the biggest title of her career – and seventh ITF singles crown overall – as a lucky loser at W35 Antalya at the turn of this month. That triumph followed back-to-back semi-final appearances as a qualifier at W35 tournaments held at the same venue in Turkiye.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Priscilla Hon won her second W75 title of 2025 after following her January triumph in Brisbane with victory on Romanian soil at Targu Mures.

The 26-year-old defeated Dutchwoman Arianne Hartono 6-3 6-4 in the final for her 13th ITF singles triumph overall.

Elsewhere, Joanna Garland, of Chinese Taipei, continued her fine season with her fourth title of 2025 on Italian soil at W35 Solarino.

It followed her victory at the same venue the previous week and sees the 23-year-old improve to a 24-4 win-loss record on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season – just one win behind Tour-leader Victoria Mboko.

Garland climbs 28 spots to No. 222 in the WTA rankings – one spot off the career-high she achieved two years ago.
