Krejcikova and Siniakova named ITF World Champions for a third time
Czech duo Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova have been crowned ITF World Champions in the women’s doubles category for a third time following another standout year as a pair.
Krejcikova and Siniakova, who also won the award in 2018 and 2021, enjoyed an incredible season together - particularly at the Grand Slams - winning titles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
"It is a great honour to receive the ITF Women's Doubles World Champion award for the third time and I am grateful for the results and memories I have made with my doubles partner this year," said Krejcikova.
"We hope that our success will continue inspiring young kids around the world and help them believe in their dreams on and off the court. I am so grateful to my family, my coaching team, mentors, partners, fans and everyone else who has stood by me and who is constantly supporting me to achieve my dreams."
"I am so happy to be announced as best doubles team two years in a row,” Siniakova added. “I am really satisfied with this season and looking forward to next year.”
Krejcikova and Siniakova compiled a 27-5 win-loss record together in 2022, doubling their Grand Slam doubles title haul as a team from three to six with their maiden Australian and US Open triumphs, and their second Wimbledon crown.
The Czech duo, who first teamed up as juniors back in 2013 and won three of the four Grand Slams in girls doubles that same year, might look back on that special year as stimulus for them to repeat the feat on the professional stage nine years later.
Unbeatable at the Australian Open, they cantered to the title decider without dropping a set before overcoming Beatriz Haddad Maia and Anna Danilina 6-7(3) 6-4 6-4 for a memorable maiden Melbourne triumph.
Though their performances outside the Grand Slams were unremarkable, by their standards, until the end of the year (a quarter-final in Doha and semi-finals in Cleveland and Guadalajara were their Tour-level highlights before the year-end WTA Finals), they proved clinical at the biggest events.
Krejcikova and Siniakova overcame Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai 6-2 6-4 for their second Wimbledon win – four years after their first at the All England Club – and then completed both the career Grand Slam, and the career Golden Slam, after seeing off Taylor Townsend and Caty McNally 3-6 7-5 6-1 for their first US Open triumph.
They are just the second women’s doubles team to complete the career Golden Slam after Serena and Venus Williams, who completed the feat at the 2001 Australian Open, following earlier triumphs at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 1999, and Wimbledon and the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
The dynamic duo almost finished 2022 on a winning note, but were narrowly edged out in the defence of their WTA Finals title as they fell 6-2 4-6 11-9 to Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova in the title decider in Fort Worth.
A uniquely talented pairing, Siniakova and Krejcikova, the year-end doubles world No. 1 and No. 3 respectively, are the third team to be named ITF World Champions in women’s doubles on as many as three occasions, along with Virginia Ruano-Pascual and Paola Suarez (2002-2004) and Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci (2012-2014).
