Maria ends run of four defeats with title in Trnava

02 Dec 2024

Tatjana Maria ended a four-match losing streak in style by cruising to the title on the ITF World Tennis Tour at W75 Trnava.

The 37-year-old German banished memories of recent opening round defeats on the WTA Tour at Merida and Midland, and to world No. 484 Priska Madelyn Nugroho at ITF W100 Takasaki in November, with a run of five straight victories on Slovakian soil.

She saw off Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage 6-4 6-1 in the title match to claim her first title in 15 months, and her 22nd professional title overall.

Maria was in danger of slipping out of the world’s top 100, but climbs nine places to No. 87 in the world as a result of her triumph.

For Burrage, meanwhile, it was also a positive week, given she is still on the comeback trail after six months on the sidelines due to injury.

It was her first appearance in a final since she finished runner-up at the WTA Nottingham event in June 2023, and follows on from semi-final showings at W35 Villeneuve d’Ascq and W50 Funchal over the past month.

It was also a good week for Australia's Daria Saville, who won her first professional title in seven years with victory on the gold coast at W75 Carrara.

The 30-year-old has six pro titles to her name overall, including five on the ITF World Tennis Tour and one - the scene of her previous triumph - at the WTA New Haven event in 2017.
