Magic Marino beats Niemeier for biggest title yet at W100 Irapuato
Rebecca Marino clinched her first title in almost two years – and the biggest of her career – on the ITF World Tennis Tour after winning on Mexican soil at W100 Irapuato.
The 33-year-old Canadian, whose previous biggest wins came at W60 Arcadia (USA) in 2022 and W60 Kurume (JPN) in 2019, dropped just a solitary set all week before cantering to a 6-1 6-2 victory over Jule Niemeier in the singles final.
She very nearly walked away from Irapuato with two titles, narrowly falling alongside partner Ann Li to Hailey Baptise and Whitney Osuigwe in the doubles final. That took nothing away from her fine week in the Mexican city though.
"I am happy to return to Irapuato," said Marino. "I was here in 2022, I reached the final and fell short then.
"Returning to the doubles finals in 2024 and being the singles champion is very special and I am very happy.
"I took a five-year break, came back and now I feel happy to be doing the sport that I love the most."
Marino has now won 14 ITF singles titles, 13 of which have come on her favoured hard court.
She becomes the fourth Canadian to win an ITF W100 title after compatriots Carol Zhao and Aleksandra Wozniak, who each achieved the feat twice, and Sharon Fichman, who won W100 Cagnes-Sur-Mer in 2014.
