Marterer describes late entry into Olympics as 'dream come true'
Maximilian Marterer has described his upcoming participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Tennis Event as a ‘dream come true’ after he was announced as a late replacement for Soonwoo Kwon at the upcoming Games on 27 July - 4 August.
Marterer, 29, is set to make his Olympic debut following Kwon’s withdrawal due to an ankle injury, and joins nine other German players competing for a medal in Paris.
"I am really happy to be in Paris and to have worked hard for this," said Marterer, the world No. 108.
"I really wanted this. This is a big dream come true for me."
Marterer, a left hander whose best Grand Slam result is a run to the round of 16 at Roland Garros in 2016, joins reigning Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff and Dominik Koepfer in the men’s singles event in Paris.
Angelique Kerber, Tatjana Maria, Tamara Korpatsch and Laura Siegemund will compete for Germany in the women’s singles event.
Struff and Koepfer and Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz pair up in the men’s doubles event, while Kerber and Siegemund and Maria and Korpatsch form teams in the women’s doubles.
Following Kwon’s withdrawal, Korea, Republic no longer has a representative at the Olympic Tennis Event, with 40 nations and 184 players due to take part in the upcoming Games.
The action gets underway at 12 local time on Saturday 27 July.
