Mayot bounces back from Melbourne defeat with Monastir crown

24 Jan 2022

Former junior world No. 1 Harold Mayot won his second men’s title – and first in over two years – on the ITF World Tennis Tour at M25 Monastir.

The 19-year-old Frenchman defeated Korean Yunseong Chung 6-4 0-6 6-4 for his first pro title since he won M15 Villers Les Nancy in November 2019.

Mayot’s triumph was the perfect response to his defeat in the first round of qualifying for the Australian Open where, as a wild card, he fell to fellow Frenchman Quentin Halys in straight sets.

Mayot, the current world No. 471, has good memories of Melbourne given that it provided the stage for the best result of his junior career: when he defeated compatriot Arthur Cazaux to win the 2020 Australian Open boys’ singles title.

Mayot was one of two teenage winners on the men’s ITF World Tennis Tour last week along with Russian Alibek Kachmazov, who won his fourth ITF crown with victory over compatriot Marat Sharipov at M15 Kazan.
