Mboko the latest talented teen to win an ITF W60 crown
Canadian Victoria Mboko joined an impressive list of 16-year-olds to win a W60 title on the ITF World Tennis Tour after triumphing at W60 Saskatoon on Sunday.
Mboko, who didn’t drop a set all week, defeated American Emina Bektas 6-4 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final to win her second professional singles title – a year after claiming her first at a W25 event at the same venue.
Just seven other players have won an ITF W60 title before turning 17, with Mirra Andreeva (3 W60 titles), Sara Bejlek (3), Clara Tauson (2), Linda Noskova, Amanda Anisimova, Marta Kostyuk, Alina Korneeva all achieving the feat.
Five of those seven have gone on to achieve a top 100 ranking to date.
Mboko is a former junior world No. 6 following a hugely impressive 2022 season in which she reached the girls’ singles semi-finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open and finished runner-up in doubles at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Her latest stride forward in the women’s game saw her rocket 146 spots to a career-high ranking of No. 331 on Monday.
At the other end of the spectrum, 38-year-old Estoniain Kaia Kanepi collected her first title in almost two years on the ITF World Tennis Tour at AW60 Amstelveen.
The former world No. 15 defeated promising teenagers Brenda Fruhvirtova and Lola Radivojevic in back-to-back matches for her 25th professional singles crown overall.
Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro was also a winner at W60 Rome, defeating Raluca Georgiana Serban to win her first title of 2023 – and the biggest of her career.
The 20-year-old Spaniard has now claimed nine titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour – including five last season – but this was her first above W25 level.
