Cappelletti and Ramos seal biggest title of the year so far
Top seeds Michele Cappelletti and Antomi Ramos claimed the biggest ITF Beach Tennis World Tour title of 2021 so far at BT400 Kazan, with Italian pairing Giulia Gasparri and Ninny Valentini winning in the women’s event.
Cappelletti and Ramos, who are ranked No. 2 and No. 4 in the world respectively, only started playing with one another at the end of 2020, but the Italian-Spanish pairing have already picked up three titles together.
The victory in Kazan, which is the biggest event that has taken place on the ITF Beach Tennis World Tour this year, bodes well for the pair's progress in the rest of 2021 as more and more major events start taking place.
The ITF Sand Series launches in Saarlouis at the end of August and will no doubt be a focus for all of the top pairings on tour.
In Kazan, Cappelletti and Ramos, seeded No. 1, defeated Diego Bollettinari and Marco Faccini 6-3 7-6(3) to win the title. The all-Italian duo had taken down No. 2 seeds Nikita Burmakin of Russia and Tommaso Giovannini 6-4 6-4 in the semi-finals.
In the women's event, there was more Italian success as Gasparri and Valentini cruised to the title. The pair only dropped 14 games through the entire event as they clinched the title with a 6-2 6-2 win over Germany's Maraike Biglmaier and Italy's Veronica Casadei in the final.
The German-Italian combo ousted top seeds Sofia Cimatti and Nicole Nobile in an extraordinary match that saw the pair come back from a set down to triumph 0-6 7-5 11-9 but couldn't carry that form into the final in Russia.
