Monnet crafts another masterpiece in Monastir
Eighteen-year-old Frenchwoman Carole Monnet continued her love-affair with Monastir after winning her fifth W15 title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in the Tunisian city on Sunday.
Monnet defeated Belarusian Yuliya Hatouka 2-6 6-1 7-5 at the hard-court tournament to improve her record in ITF finals to 5-3, with all three of her defeats in title-matches coming outside Tunisia – in Cantanhede and Lousada in Portugal, and in Antalya, Turkey.
Both of Monnet’s doubles titles have also come in Monastir, such is her track record for success at the W15 tournament.
Lefthander Monnet made her Grand Slam qualifying debut as a wild card this year, defeating Whitney Osuigwe in the first round at Roland Garros in late September before falling in round two.
Meanwhile, Andreea Amalia Rosca won her third title of the season – and second in as many weeks in Crete – after defeating Czech teenager Darja Vidmanova in the final at W15 Heraklion.
The 21-year-old Romanian defeated Vidmanova 6-1 6-2 to follow her win over Martina Colmegna in last week’s title decider and claim her 10th ITF singles title overall.
Rosca, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 210 in November 2018 but finds herself at No. 515 in the world two years on, has compiled a 36-9 win-loss record in 2020 as she targets a return to her former heights. The Romanian has played exclusively on clay this year, while all 10 of her career singles titles have come on her preferred surface.
Despite her defeat, seventeen-year-old Vidmanova, the junior world No. 33, could celebrate reaching her first professional singles final, two weeks after progressing to her first ITF singles semi-final at the same venue.
Carolina Meligeni Rodrigues Alves won her first title of the year at W15 Cairo after beating Russia’s Daria Mishina 7-5 6-4 in the final.
The triumph marked a fourth professional singles title overall for the 24-year-old Brazilian, and her second at W15 level following her win at W15 Sao Paulo in 2019.
Rodrigues Alves has enjoyed her greatest success in doubles, having collected 15 career doubles titles - including two this year at W15 tournaments in Porto and Cancun - and climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 210 in the team format this February.
Meanwhile, Andrea Lazaro Garcia and Maryna Zanevska shared runner-up points in the final at W15 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after the weather conditions forced organisers to abandon the tournament with Lazaro Garcia just a game away from winning her first title of the year.
The Spaniard, who has won five ITF singles titles, led 7-5 6-5 when the players were forced off court.
