Olympic Tennis Daily: Coco’s emotional exit, Kerber, Murray live on

30 Jul 2024

Christopher Clarey and Romain Vinot reflect on another incredible day at the Paris 2024 Olympic Tennis Event, headlined by Coco Gauff’s surprise departure at the hands of Donna Vekic.

The Croatian became the first player from her country to reach an Olympic women’s singles quarter-final since Iva Majoli at Atlanta 1996 – the year she was born – while Gauff was soon followed out of singles by world No. 5 Jasmine Paolini, who fell victim to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova’s second triumph over a top 10 player.

The stories were abundant on the outside courts on a stiflingly hot day at Roland Garros that saw the extreme weather policy come in to force, with the likes of Zheng Qinwen and Marta Kostyuk winning epic battles in the heat against Emma Navarro and Maria Sakkari, respectively.
