Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz claimed her first ITF World Tennis Tour title for nearly a year – since her triumph at W100 Landisville – after conquering all before her at W100 Gran Canaria.

W100s are the highest classification of women’s event on the ITF World Tennis Tour and, as such, carry the highest number of rankings and the greatest prestige for the winners. Parrizas-Diaz now has two W100s to her name.

Granada-born Parrizas-Diaz did not drop a set all week in Gran Canaria and duly lifted silverware after defeating fellow Spaniard Andrea Lazaro-Garcia 6-4 6-3 in the final. Indeed, the 33-year-old conceded just 25 games during the tournament.

Her latest title propels Parrizas-Diaz to No. 116 in the WTA Rankings, her highest ranking since January when she sealed the third WTA 125 crown of her career in Canberra ahead of Australian Open qualifying.

Parrizas-Diaz is now once again in touching distance of the Top 100 as she plots her return to a double-digit ranking for the first time since May 2023. Her career-best ranking remains No. 45, which she achieved in May 2022.

The two titles which Parrizas-Diaz has won this year were her first since 2021 during which she won a staggering seven as she continued her surge up the rankings and defied medical advice.

Five years earlier, when she was just 24, Parrizas-Diaz was advised by medical professionals to hang up her racket for good after suffering a serious shoulder injury that showed no sign of withstanding the rigours of the professional game.

Thankfully, Parrizas-Diaz, who has represented Spain on five occasions in Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge, seems to be on an upwards trajectory once again, with her latest victory on the ITF World Tennis Tour a potential springboard for further elevation.
