Parrizas-Diaz pulls off W100 double in timely boost for US Open

19 Aug 2024

Nuria Parrizas-Diaz heads into the US Open in prime form after recording back-to-back W100 titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

The 33-year-old Spaniard, who will face Julia Avdeeva in the first round of the qualifying event at Flushing Meadows, heads to New York in confident mood after triumphing on clay at W100 Gran Canaria at the turn of the month and, this weekend, on hard courts at W100 Cary, North Carolina.

Parrizas-Diaz overcame Renata Zarazua 6-3 3-6 7-6(2) in a fiercely contested final on Saturday for her 10th consecutive match-win and third professional title of the year, adding to her triumph at the WTA 125 event in Canberra at the turn of the year.

It was her third victory at ITF W100 level - the highest classification of women’s event on the ITF World Tennis Tour – and her 27th professional singles title overall.

Parrizas-Diaz is set to rise to No. 99 in the WTA rankings this week but will still need to battle through three rounds of qualifying if she it to make an appearance in the US Open main draw for a third time next week.

She fell in the first round in New York in both 2021 and 2022, but will be buoyed by her performances at the other hard court Grand Slam having reached the third round at the Australian Open in both 2022 and 2023.

Those are her only forays beyond the opening round in her eight Grand Slam appearances to date.

As evident in her recent results, though, Parrizas-Diaz continues to relish every moment of her tennis career.

Nine years ago, aged just 24, the Spaniard was advised by medical professionals to hang up her racket for good after suffering a serious shoulder injury that showed no sign of standing up to the rigours of the professional game.

She took a year off, and returned at the end on the 2016 season with no ill-effects, going on to climb to a career-high No. 45 in the world in March 2022 and contest her first five ties for her nation in the Billie Jean King Cup.
