Zheng reaches Top 100 after long haul to W60 Orlando
China’s Zheng Qinwen followed her breakthrough performances at Melbourne Park with the biggest hard-court title of her career, swapping the balmy Australian Open climes for the chilly conditions of Florida in January to win W60 Orlando, FL.
The 19-year-old defeated USA’s Christina McHale 6-0 6-1 to wrap up victory without dropping a set all week, surging into the Top 100 for the first time in her career.
Combined with her semi-final appearance at WTA Melbourne Summer Set 1 and qualifying run to the second round of the Australian Open – the first Grand Slam appearance of her professional career – Zheng’s eighth ITF World Tennis Tour title has seen her ranking rise from No. 143 at the end of 2021 to a career-high No. 80 within a month, the ideal start to the year for a player targeting a Top-30 ranking by the end of the season.
Zheng, a 2022 recipient of a $25,000 Grand Slam Player Grant, is now unbeaten in eight ITF World Tennis Tour Finals in her career – four on hard courts, four on clay – and has now claimed two W60 crowns, having triumphed at W60 Stare Splavy in June 2021.
In France, Romania’s Ana Bogdan claimed her first singles title in three seasons at W60 Andrezieux-Boutheon, defeating Anna Blinkova of Russia 7-5 6-3 in the final.
The 29-year-old’s victory, her first since winning W100+H Dubai in 2019 and the 14th of her career, raises her ranking to No. 101, while former ITF Junior Masters champion Blinkova’s own wait for a first professional title since 2019 goes on.
Elizabeth Mandlik collected her second W25 Florianopolis title in as many weeks, posting 10 wins for the loss of just one set in Brazil. The American 20-year-old eased past Netherlands’ Eva Vedder 6-3 6-4 to secure her sixth title and fifth on hard courts, rising to a new career-high ranking of No. 393 in the process.
By contrast, Nigina Abduraimova’s route to the W25 Monastir title was anything but straightforward. Having survived a final-set tiebreak against Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure in the quarter-finals, the Uzbekistani repeated the feat in the final, beating Korea, Rep’s Na-Lae Han 6-3 4-6 7-6(7) for her 11th ITF World Tennis Tour title.
Han, who won the singles title in Tunisia a week earlier, claimed the doubles crown alongside Hong Kong, China’s Eudice Chong, beating Anna Kubareva of Belarus and Russia’s Maria Timofeeva 7-5 6-3.
In Great Britain, Sofia Nami Samavati completed a dream week at W25 Loughborough, winning seven matches in succession without dropping a set to claim her second ITF World Tennis Tour crown.
The 21-year-old Danish qualifier defeated Georgia’s Mariam Bolkvadze, the world No. 177 ranked almost 600 places above Samavati in the WTA rankings at the start of the week, to claim the title after the tournament top seed was forced to retire with a thigh injury while trailing 6-2 5-5.
Like Samavati, Selena Janicijevic of France collected her first W25 title with victory at W25 Cairo, defeating Austria’s Sinja Kraus in the final 7-5 3-6 6-3. There was consolation for Kraus in the doubles, where she collected the crown with compatriot Melanie Klaffner with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Hungary’s Adrienn Nagy and Prarthana G Thombare of India.
W25 Manacor celebrated a home victory as wild card Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers collected the biggest title of her career, defeating Ipek Oz of Turkey 6-2 6-2 at the Rafael Nadal Academy. The Spaniard, who defeated top seed Dalma Galfi in the second round, lifted her first crown since 2020, taking her career tally to seven.
There was local cause for celebration at W15 Antalya, where Turkey’s Ilay Yoruk defeated Spain’s Claudia Hoste Ferrer 6-2 6-3 for her maiden title, while at W15 Cancun Canada’s Stacey Fung denied Julie Belgraver her first singles title with a 7-6(1) 7-5 victory in the final. Belgraver also fell in the doubles final alongside fellow French 19-year-old Jade Bornay.
