Region of Andalucía and ITF to bring team tennis events to region
- 2023 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals to take place in Seville on 7-12 November, hosted in Spain for first time since 2008
- Billie Jean King Cup Juniors by Gainbridge Finals and Davis Cup Juniors Finals will also take place in Cordoba later this year
- The Davis Cup Final 8 knockout stage also returns to Andalucia for the 2nd straight year, taking place in Malaga on 21-26 November
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has today announced that the Spanish region of Andalucía will become the home of major ITF team events in 2023, including the finals of the women’s and men’s World Cup of Tennis.
November sees the climax of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge, and both showpiece events will take place in Andalucía this year. As previously announced, Malaga will host the Davis Cup Final 8 on 21-26 November and Seville has been confirmed today as the host of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals on 7-12 November. As part of the agreement, Seville will host the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the next two years, with an option to extend for a third year.
The ITF has also confirmed today that the Billie Jean King Cup Juniors by Gainbridge and Davis Cup Juniors Finals will take place in Cordoba, with details of dates and venues to be announced in due course.
Both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup have seen record entries in 2023 – with 155 and 134 nations respectively registering to take part.
Spain remain in contention for both titles. They will compete in Davis Cup Finals Group C in Valencia in September alongside Czechia, Korea Republic and Serbia. They qualified for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals thanks to a 3-1 win over Mexico in Marbella in April’s Qualifiers.
This will be the sixth time (and first time since 2008) that Spain has hosted the Finals of the Billie Jean King Cup – which is celebrating 60 years since it was first played in June 1963. Further details about the venue in Seville will be confirmed in due course.
Arturo Bernal, Region of Andalucia Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, said: “Andalucía has earned the right to be a privileged destination to host important international sport events. Everyone wants to come to our land, due to the warm welcome we give to athletes, and for having top-level facilities for practicing sports, which is why it is a satisfaction that the ITF has once again trusted us so that the community becomes the first region to host the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup Finals in the same year, as well as the junior category of both events. In short, Andalusia once again becomes the House of International Sports”.
David Haggerty, ITF President, said: “We are excited to be bringing the showpiece finals of the men’s and women’s World Cup of Tennis to Andalucía this year, as well as the junior finals of both competitions. The region has a rich history of staging fantastic tennis events at all levels and we are very confident the region will do justice to the prestige of each of our events. Throughout the various stages of each event this year we have seen how much it means to players – both professional and junior – to represent their countries, and I have no doubt that passion will be on show in November.”
