Rune and Vekic among final players confirmed for Hopman Cup
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and event partner Tennium have announced the final three teams that will compete in the 2023 Hopman Cup, the ITF’s official mixed team competition, at the Nice Lawn Tennis Club on 19-23 July.
Speaking at an official tournament press conference at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nice on Tuesday 4 April, Tournament Director Iva Majoli revealed the following teams will take part in this year’s competition, which is the first edition of the prestigious event since 2019:
Belgium – David Goffin and Elise Mertens
Croatia – Borna Coric and Donna Vekic
Denmark – Holger Rune and Clara Tauson
They join Richard Gasquet and Alize Cornet (France), Carlos Alcaraz and Paula Badosa (Spain) and Leandro Riedi and Belinda Bencic (Switzerland) in signing up for the event.
A total of six teams will compete in the 2023 and 2024 editions, expanding to eight from 2025 onwards. As hosts, France will field a team each year. The event will be played on clay.
As in previous editions of the competition, each team will consist of one male and one female player with ties between nations featuring one men’s singles match, one women’s singles match and a mixed doubles match.
Named after renowned Australian Davis Cup captain Harry Hopman, the Hopman Cup was founded in 1989 and was previously played in Perth, Australia. This year’s players will be joining an illustrious list of previous competitors including Roger Federer, Steffi Graf, Andy Murray, Li Na, John McEnroe and Serena Williams.
David Haggerty, ITF President, said: “Today’s announcement completes a fantastic line-up of teams for the return of the Hopman Cup, and with tickets going on sale today the anticipation ahead of the event is really starting to build. This is another of our events that gives players the opportunity to represent their countries and compete for something bigger than themselves – which has attracted some of the world’s biggest names to the tournament. The Hopman Cup has always been a special fixture on the annual tennis calendar and, along with our event partners Tennium, we are looking forward bringing it to Nice this year.
Kristoff Puelinckx, Tennium CEO said: "We are lucky to have an incredible line-up of players, it's a great mix of youth and experience. We believe Nice is going to be the perfect stage for this new edition of the Hopman Cup, and we couldn't be happier to organise it with the help of the city and the Nice Lawn Tennis Club."
Donna Vekic said: "It's always been a dream of mine to play in this competition. I could have played in Perth, but it was a close call because I was a substitute. So I'm very happy to be able to represent Croatia and finally take part in this beautiful tournament."
Holger Rune: "Clara and I know each other very well, and I'm delighted to be able to play with her. We've played doubles on the junior circuit before and we were undefeated then. I am delighted to be able to participate in this competition, which I have always followed."
