Rune 'really sorry' to miss Paris 2024

24 Jul 2024

Holger Rune has been forced to withdraw from the Olympic tennis event ahead of the draw because of an ongoing wrist injury.

The world No. 16, who was due to make his Olympic debut for Denmark, said, "I'm really sorry that I have to withdraw from the Olympics. It's something I've been looking forward to playing and being a part of immensely."

Rune, who has had his best Grand Slam results on clay at Roland Garros, explained that his injury problems have dogged him for the past couple of months.

"My wrist has been causing problems since I played in Rome, and after playing through pain during both the clay and grass seasons, I have to take the medical advice seriously. Various measures have been initiated, and if all goes according to plan, I should be able to be ready to play in the upcoming tournaments in the USA."

Rune was the only Danish man competing in tennis at Paris 2024, but his countrywomen Clare Tauson and Caroline Wozniacki are taking part.

"I will be following the Olympics from home and cheering on all the Danish athletes, and I hope and believe that we can bring many medals home from Paris," Rune said. "Go Denmark."

Rune's place in the singles draw has gone to Australia's Matthew Ebden, who is also competing in men's doubles and mixed doubles in Paris.
