Six nations secure spots at ITF junior team competition finals

01 Jul 2021

The line-up for the Finals of the 2021 World Junior Tennis, Junior Davis Cup and Junior Billie Jean King Cup by BNP Paribas events took a step closer to being finalised last week.

Thirteen teams from six different nations secured their place in the final of the ITF’s showpiece junior team competitions after winning through qualifying events in South America and Africa.

Egypt, which hosted the Africa Qualifying events for both the 14 & under and 16 & under age categories, proved the most successful nation last week as all four of its teams across the girls’ and boys’ events won through to the Finals.

They will be joined in both boys’ and girls’ events at the World Junior Tennis Finals, taking place in Prostejov on 2-7 August, by Colombia and Ecuador who also enjoyed a perfect week at the South America Qualifying event for 14 & under players in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Morocco’s girls’ team will also feature in Prostejov, as will the boys’ teams from Tunisia and Argentina.

They will join the already qualified boys’ and girls’ teams from Canada and Mexico, who both came through the North/Central America & Caribbean qualifying event in Merida, Mexico in May.

Both boys’ and girls’ teams from Japan and Thailand, plus India’s boys’ and Korea and Hong Kong’s girls’ teams, will represent the Asia/Oceania region in Prostejov, despite not having to play a match. The region’s qualifying event didn’t take place this year, with results over a three-year-average used to determine which teams advanced to the Finals.

Tunisia’s boys’ joined Egypt in qualifying for the Junior Davis Cup Finals, while Morocco followed the host nation’s lead in earning a place in the Junior Billie Jean King Cup Finals. The combined 16 and under competition will take place in Antalya, Turkey on 28 September – 3 October, with Canada and Mexico also confirmed to take part in both events.

European Final Qualifying for the World Junior Tennis event is next on the agenda on 2-4 July.
