Super-Seniors World Championships reaches crunch time in Mallorca
The 2021 Super-Seniors World Individual Championships is reaching crunch time at the Beach Club Font de sa Cala, Mallorca.
In the first ever Men’s 90 event, the culmination of the doubles saw an all-Czech affair in front of an appreciative crowd. Stanislav Hlavsa and Vladimir Honomichl took on Vladimir Bruna and Jan Kubat, and it was the former who took home the honours.
With a combined age of 369, the Czech quartet thrilled spectators with high-quality tennis and fair sportsmanship to make the inaugural Men’s 90 doubles a resounding success. Henri Crutchet and Yves Lehmann were crowned overall champions of the inaugural round robin event.
The only other final of the day involved Monique Bobillier and Beatrice Wettstein in the Women’s 85 Singles Consolation, Bobillier prevailing in straight sets.
Elsewhere in the tournament, the events are rapidly moving towards the title matches on Friday and Saturday. The focus will turn to the women’s singles events tomorrow, with each category crowning its 2021 champion on Friday.
The Women’s 65 singles sees the top two ranked players clash, Carolyn Nichols hoping to live up to her number one seeding against Brazilian second seed Patricia Medrado.
Germany are guaranteed the gold and silver medals in the Women’s 70 singles, with Heide Froeysok facing off against compatriot Reinhilde Adams.
Much like the Women’s 70s, the Women’s 75 singles will also feature two Germans – unseeded Gusula Eisemann against sixth seed Barbara von Ende.
Donna Fales, of the United States, will hope to break up the German monopoly against Irmgard Gerlatzska in the Women’s 80 singles final.
Completing the women’s singles final line-up are Mexico’s Alejandrina Pinedo and France’s Odile Niox Chateau for the Women’s 85 title.
On the men’s side, the doubles finals will be taking place on Friday across the age categories, from Men’s 65 to Men’s 85.
The lone men’s singles final features Brit Leonard Lawrence and Frenchman Henri Crutchet for the honour of becoming the first Men’s 90 singles world champion.
