Swedes achieve rare double triumph on men's ITF World Tennis Tour
They once dominated the global tennis scene through the likes of the legendary Bjorn Borg, Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander, but while Swedish tennis remains someway off its past glories, that winning feeling is coming back for the nation at the entry level to men's professional tennis on the ITF World Tennis Tour.
This weekend 20-year-old Olle Wallin collected his maiden professional title at M15 Lubbock, swiftly following Karl Friberg’s fourth ITF singles title - and third of the year – at M15 Danderyd.
It is only the second time in eight years that two Swedish men have won titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour in the same week – a feat last achieved by Gustav Hansson and Christian Lindell in 2019, and by Patrik Rosenholm and Elias Ymer before that, back in 2014.
Wallin becomes the fourth Swedish man to win an ITF singles title this year, after Friberg, Nicolae Dragos Madaras and Jonathan Mridha.
Elsewhere, Czech teenager Hynek Barton also won his maiden title on the ITF World Tennis Tour over the weekend at M25 Pardubice.
Wild card Barton, who had never previously been beyond the second round at a professional event, won five matches on the bounce – including a 7-5 7-5 victory over Britain’s Felix Gill in the final.
The 18-year-old, a promising junior having climbed to No. 23 in the boys’ rankings this month, reached the quarter-finals of the boys’ singles at the US Open and is seeking a quick transition to the men’s game.
Also this weekend:
Carlos Lopez Montagud won his fifth title of the year – and indeed his career – after winning at M25 Santa Margherita Di Pula.
American Sam Riffice, Italian Daniele Capecchi and Moldovan Alexander Cozbinov all ended three-year waits for their second titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour after winning titles at M15 Fayetteville, M15 Sharm El Sheikh and M15 Cancun, respectively.
Former junior world No. 11 Alvaro Lopez San Martin won the 12th ITF singles title of his career with victory at M15 Melilla.
