World Tennis eChampionship launches in Tennis Clash
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced a new eSport initiative, the World Tennis eChampionship, which launches in mobile game Tennis Clash today. The announcement is the latest development in the ongoing partnership between the ITF and Wildlife Studios, which began in 2021 to bring the Billie Jean King Cup, the women's World Cup of Tennis, to mobile devices.
Tennis Clash is the world’s leading mobile tennis game in the world and is consistently ranked in the top 5 in the sports games category in the App Store. It was selected as one of the “5 best competitive games of 2019” in Google Play. The game, which was developed following in-depth studies and analysis of the sport, has found popularity with both mobile gamers and tennis fans.
The World Tennis eChamipionship will begin as an online-only event with the first in-game themed tournament on Thursday 5 October at 1900 CET (1700 GMT). When the event begins, it will feature the return of the Future of Tennis String, an in-game upgrade to the basic racket string; 20% of the revenue from these purchases will be shared with the ITF to support young tennis players.
In addition to today’s event, further World Tennis eChampionship tournaments are planned in Tennis Clash for November and December and into 2024. Tennis Clash has also hosted games based on the Billie Jean King Cup in 2021 and 2022, and was the platform for tennis during this year’s Olympic eSports series, which featured qualifiers in May before an in-person finals tournament in Singapore.
Kelly Fairweather, ITF Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Wildlife Studios by launching the World Tennis eChampionship in Tennis Clash today. We have already seen the delivery of several successful events in the game over the last two years, and we are sure that the World Tennis eChampionship will prove hugely popular. We are confident that the partnership helps to introduce more people to our sport and promote the ITF’s mission to deliver tennis for future generations.”
Felipe Medes, Tennis Clash Game Manager, said: “Our connection with the International Tennis Federation continues to be strengthened between Tennis Clash and the real sport of tennis by not only bringing recognizable and official brands to the game, but by truly supporting the sport. We are absolutely elated to provide resources to the next generation of tennis players with every purchase of the ‘Future of Tennis’ string.”
