Gustavo Fernandez (ARG) and Dana Mathewson (USA) won the men's and women's singles gold medals at the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago to all but secure ther automatic qualification for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
While Fernandez and Mathewson were both part of the gold medal-winning partnerships in the men's and women's doubles, alongisde Ezequiel Casco and Maylee Phelps, Chile fittingly finished top of the wheelchair tennis medal table on home soil, after Francisco Cayulef claimed the quad singles gold medal and partnered Diego Perez to win the quad doubles gold medal.
The Parapan American Games was the fourth of four regional multisport events held during 2023 - along with the African Para Games, the Asian Para Games and the European Para Championships - that included wheelchair tennis tournaments sanctioned with ITF 2 Series status on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.
The men’s and women’s singles champions earned a direct qualification slot for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games subject to also meeting additional ITF requirements.
The Games featured a 12 draw for quad division players, a 16 draw for women and a 24 draw for men, with players representing 13 countries across all events.
A total of six nations - Chile, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Canada won wheelchair tennis medals at the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago.
